Tooth Decay Risk Factors

There are three root causes of practically all tooth related problems: issues with saliva, frequent snacking, and a lack of tooth care. However here are some other Risk Factors for developing tooth decay:
1. Frequent Tobacco Use
Can cause dry mouth and reduced salivary flow.

2. Acid Reflux
Stomach acids refluxing into the throat or mouth has the effect of immersing the teeth with very low pH (pH 1.5–3.5) stomach acids. Not aided by the remedies, either over the counter or prescription, which can cause dry mouth.

3. Diabetes
Frequent snacks don't allow a healthy mouth pH level to thrive, putting them at more risk of cavities/ tooth decay. Dry mouth due to medications can also factor.

4. Bulimia
Teeth have regular exposure to stomach acid, causing acid erosion to teeth and enabling acidic bacteria to imbalance the biofilm.

5. Head and Neck Radiation Therapy
Leads to chronic salivary gland dysfunction, causing dry mouth.
6. Sjögren’s Syndrome, which is a chronic disorder of the immune system in which the patient’s white blood cells attack the saliva and tear glands. One of the side effects is dry mouth because saliva production capacity is reduced.

7. Other Drug Use
Illicit drug use, poor diet, fizzy drinks, cause reduced saliva flow and dry mouth.
